Rocky Mountain MS Center presents...

Invisible Symptoms of MS: Cognition, Fatigue and Depression

April 24th, 2010
8:00 am to 12:00pm

The Summit Conference and Event Center
411 Sable Boulevard North
Aurora, CO 80011

Join us for a seminar addressing the issues that people with MS often struggle with the most; Fatigue, Depression and Cognition. They can be all the more daunting, because they are often invisible to others - and hence the familiar ; “But you look so good”.

When attorney Jeffrey N. Gingold misplaced his wife on the living room couch, and became lost while driving just blocks from his home, little did he know that he was experiencing a hidden symptom of multiple sclerosis: cognitive difficulties. Facing the Cognitive Challenges of Multiple Sclerosis is a courageous and compelling personal account of one man's anguishing struggle with this aspect of the disease. It was written for the silent majority of MS patients who are privately dealing with MS cognitive symptoms and potential disabilities. His latest book, Mental Sharpening Stones is about how to successfully manage the cognitive challenges of MS.

Dr. Tim Vollmer, Medical Director of the Rocky Mountain MS Center will share the latest research and treatments available to address the invisible symptoms of MS. There have been exciting developments and new options for successfully treating these challenging symptoms.

Patricia Kennedy, RN, CNP, MSCN will discuss how to define the invisible symptoms of MS.

This event is free, but registration is required. Please register at: http://www.mscenter.org/news-a-events/calendar-of-events?view=event&did=82&shw_attendees=0

Spring Camping Trip

The Spring Camping Trip took place March 31- April 2.  The group went to the Golden Bell Campgrounds near Colorado Springs, for the second year in a row.  The campers took a tour of the the Air Force Academy and spent time soaking in the beauty at Garden of the Gods.  The rest of the few days were spent with good company, making crafts, telling ghost stories, and sitting by the fire, just to name a few.

KADEP participant, Cory said, "The meals were delicious!" and Ryan said, "It was so fun!"   Hans-Gerd also celebrated his birthday with his fellow KADEP campers while on the trip.  They even had birthday cake!

Special thanks to Staff members, Chris, Shin, and Leah, for making this trip super fun!

Poetry Collaboration

This poem was written by Carole's Poetry Class.  One person started with a line in the poem and everyone added a line as poem went on.

Sweet day, so cool, so calm, so bright
at day break-- I saw the first light
which was so bright, I saw the white bird in flight
I was awestruck in the night
I just didn't have the same delight.
Good night sweet heart.
Good night
Sweet heart good night
Precious day to come
Day after Day
like the first of May
I say hooray
for I did not stray
and I will welcome a new day!

Need help paying your heating bill?

COLORADANS STRUGGLING TO PAY HOME HEATING COSTS STILL HAVE TIME TO APPLY FOR LEAP BENEFITS

Applications accepted through April 30

DENVER April 2010 Colorado residents behind on home heating bills still have time to apply for help. The Low-Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) encourages Coloradans who are having a hard time paying utility costs to apply for LEAP benefits. Applications will be accepted through April 30, 2010.

LEAP provides cash assistance to help families and individuals pay winter home heating costs. The program pays the highest benefits to those with the highest heating bills and lowest incomes by family size. Applicant income cannot exceed 185 percent of the federal poverty index, which equals a maximum income of $3,400 per month before taxes for a household of four people. The minimum LEAP benefit a household could receive is $350 and the maximum is $900.

"The struggling economy along with more foreclosures and continued layoffs are placing families under financial stress. Many Coloradans are in the position where heating assistance can help," Todd Jorgenson, LEAP director said. "We want eligible families and households to know that if they apply by April 30, they can receive help."

As of March 18, LEAP has helped more than 108,000 Colorado households. Even though this figure is up 21 percent from the same time last year, there are still thousands eligible for the program who have yet to apply. Completed LEAP applications can be faxed, mailed or delivered to the appropriate county office. Potential program applicants can apply several ways:

· Call 1-866-HEAT-HELP (1-866-432-8435) to have an application mailed to your home.

· Visit any county department of social/human services across the State. To locate your county¹s office, visit the program¹s Web site at http://www.cdhs.state.co.us/leap/index.htm

· Download and print an application from http://www.cdhs.state.co.us/leap .

To find out if you qualify for LEAP, call toll free 1-866-HEAT-HELP (1-866-432-8435) or visit www.cdhs.state.co.us/leap to view the most current program application requirements.
