Let the Good Times Roll! This was the theme for KADEP’s Prom this year and boy did we ever. The day was filled with singing karaoke, getting dressed up, and doing hair, make-up, and nails. Everyone enjoyed lunch in the gym which was followed by a rockin’ dance. During the dance people got their pictures taken at the juke-box photo area, enjoyed refreshments, raffled off awesome prizes including an electric guitar, and crowned the new king and queen!

KADEP’s client king and queen are Shelly Smith and Matt Longnecker, and the staff king and queen are Maria Alvarez and Shin Sakurai. Congratulations! Also congrats to Roxanne Ayers, the winner of the electric guitar!

KADEP Hosts Basketball Tournament 4-14-12

The Rocky Mountain MS Center’s Basketball Tournament was on April 14, 2012 from 8:30 AM to 4:30 PM. It was held at the King Adult Day Enrichment Program’s facility and gym. There were eight teams with a total of forty-eight players participating in the double elimination tournament.

The tournament’s purpose was to raise money to purchase adaptive sports equipment for KADEP clients. Adaptive sports equipment will allow our clients to participate in more diverse recreational activities. Now, we have the ability to adapt sport activities to make them more accessible to individuals who have Multiple Sclerosis and other neurological disorders. Adaptive sports equipment will be a resourceful tool so clients receive the benefits to recreational activities such as increased quality of life, positive social interactions, increased mobility, and to create an optimistic lifestyle. We raised a total of $662.00 to start a fund for adaptive sports groups.

We want to congratulate the winners from Encore and thank everyone who supported the event!

Buster Khan

History of China Group:

The History of China group discussed Chinggis Khan today.  They decided that KADEP participant, Buster, is a descendant of the Mongolian Ruler.   From this day forth, Buster shall be named, Buster Khan, the KADEP Ruler.

Here is some history on today's topic:

Chinggis (Genghis) Khan was born probably in 1167, though Mongol tradition has it that he was born in 1162. Because much of his early life is not described, except in myth, reliable knowledge of Chinggis's early life is very limited.

What we do know is that his father was assassinated when Chinggis was nine years old, and that this event left his family extremely vulnerable. Chinggis's mother appears in the traditional Mongol sources as a savior and great heroine.

Chinggis's mother kept her family together, even after many of her retainers left when her husband, the family patriarch, was killed. She kept the family going in the harsh desert lands of Mongolia, surviving on nuts and berries or whatever else they could find. She taught Chinggis the basic skills of survival, particularly those needed for survival in the steppelands and in the desert.

Men's Group tours Sports Authority Field

The KADEP Men's Group took a visit to Sports Authority Field in March.  They took a guided tour inside the facility.  They were guided to a private box where you could see the field.  They toured the media room and also got to spend some time in the guest locker room. The group visited the beer room and also were able to walk out the tunnel onto the field.

What a great trip!  Thanks to John, MSW intern, for planning this adventure for the men of KADEP!

Crestone Acres and Pony Express made a visit to KADEP yesterday afternoon from Longmont, Colorado.  The animal handlers, Joseph and Patrick, brought these special animals to us after making contact with Kasey, the KADEP Intern, who is specializing in Animal Assisted Therapy

We got to pet and spend time with 2 baby sheep, 4 baby goats, a pot belly pig, a chicken, a duck, a camel, a mini horse, a trick POny, a baby highland cow, a burrow, a bunny, an alpaca, and a llama.

This was a wonderful and therapeutic experience for us all- Thank you for visiting KADEP!
