March is Social Work Month

Nationwide, social workers are celebrating their profession this month, and Debra, KADEP's Licensed Social Worker, is celebrating along with them!

This year's theme for social work month is "Weaving the Threads of Resilience and Advocacy."

A Nation’s Fabric Our national fabric is comprised of many diverse lives. It is vibrant and strong because it has been woven from the stories of people from every continent into a compelling narrative of struggle, renewal, and success.  Each thread helps make a brilliant tapestry that continues to be the envy of the world.
Stronger Safety Nets Resilience and determination alone cannot overcome all crises, but weaving those strengths with targeted advocacy often can. The Social Work profession has a distinguished history of not only providing social safety nets to the most vulnerable, but also challenging systems that impede social mobility.
Positive Futures Stories of hope in the face of tragedy share a common theme: better times are ahead.  Illness, loss, abuse, and poverty shape our lives in profound ways, but how we learn to deal with each circumstance can determine how much those experiences define our limitations—or our opportunities.

Join Debra and  the 650,000 social workers across the country in celebrating the positive futures and stories of hope that fuel our communities. Click here if you want to learn more about what social workers do!

Body Image Awareness Day

The Body Image group had fun trying out some new looks this week to help celebrate Body Image Awareness month!

The group planned our experiment and offered different costume pieces to the larger KADEP community to join in the fun.

The idea was to dress different than we normally do, and see how people responded to our "new looks." We created flyers to help explain what we were doing.

All in all, the experiment was a success and we learned a lot. Thanks to all who joined in the fun!

Therapeutic Recreation Month

Governor John Hickenlooper has declared that February is Therapeutic Recreation Month in Colorado!
KADEP staff's Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists (CTRSs) are Ginny, Michelle, Donna, Beth, John, and Makena.

From the Colorado Therapeutic Recreation Society:
“Therapeutic Recreation professionals around the state are an integral part of the services provided to residents of Colorado living with a disability” said Dan Schwieder, current board member of CTRS. “Therapeutic Recreation helps to empower our community members with a disability to be more independent and to make decisions that will impact their overall health and wellness.”
Thanks for all you do, TRs!

Thank You, Laura!

Laura Hartman, our social services coordinator, boxing instructor, and all-around good person, is leaving KADEP and moving to New York to pursue some exciting opportunities.

The KADEP family had a farewell celebration for Laura, and we gave her gifts she can remember us by. We wrote special messages in a journal for her to take with her and clients created individual works of art that were then put together into a special, reversible frame.
Laura has had an amazing impact on KADEP during her seven and a half years of service, and she will take our hearts out to New York with her.

Thank you, Laura, for enriching each and every one of us. We will miss you!

Welcome Sara

I hail from the Massachusetts and I am completing my undergraduate studies in North Carolina. I am a rollerblading enthusiast and avid ice cream eater. I like to play soccer and flag football and be with friends and family. I am really excited to be here at KADEP and I look forward to exploring Colorado!

Welcome Andrew

I have come to Colorado from the cheesehead state of Wisconsin. In my spare time I enjoy fishing, cycling, Frisbee golfing, and of course spending time with my cat Ziggy. I am extremely excited to begin my journey here at KADEP.

Welcome Kelsey

Kelsey is one of the interns this semester and she is from Syracuse, NY. She enjoys spending time with her family and friends. She loves playing with her dog and taking her on walks. Kelsey really enjoys spending time outdoors and being active. She has tried rock climbing, ice climbing, hiking, kayaking, canoeing and camping. Her favorite activity is hiking and is really excited to go hike all the beautiful mountains in Colorado.

Welcome Claire

I am from Chicago, but go to school at the University of Wisconsin - La Crosse. I am a city girl at heart, but have a love for the outdoors. I enjoy rollerblading, hiking, playing sports, and random adventures. I am also a bookworm, and like to listen to live music. I enjoy working with others and making people smile. I am excited to spend time exploring Colorado, and love the new scenery of the mountains!

Welcome Olivia

My name is Olivia Staton and I have grown up in Arvada, Colorado my entire life.  I am a Recreation Major with a concentration in Therapeutic Recreation at Metropolitan State University of Denver; and I am also getting a Minor in Nutrition.  For the past 5 years I have worked for APEX Parks and Recreation District as a Senior Lifeguard, and have enjoyed spending so much time around the water.  In my free time I enjoy reading, climbing 14ers, swimming, running and traveling.  I have spent 3 summers in Belarus and have visited England, Poland and Germany.  I hope after graduation that I will have the opportunity to learn a new language and do more traveling, but I always want to end back in Colorado and ultimately plan on finding a career here.

Welcome TR Interns!

KADEP welcomes 5 Therapeutic Recreation Interns completing a 16 week internship.  Stay tuned for individual bios...
